THIS LITTLE PIGGY...
Like most people, I love markets, especially "green" markets and Chicago has quite a few. What I enjoy most about markets is observing: the direct contact between sellers and buyers, the scents, the colors, the presentation and the sense of "universality" they embody.

The Cupcake Craze
This afternoon we went to the brand new "Sprinkles" to see for ourselves what the fuss was all about. The wait wasn't too long but there was a line outside the store. The flavors available today weren't very different from each other ( vanilla, chocolate, lemon, chocolate and cinnamon, coconut and choco, peanut butter and chocolate ) One cupcake retails for $3.50 and a box of 4 is $12. We opted for a box of 4 and chose: 1 vanilla, 1 choco/marshmallow, 1 choco/peanut butter, 1 black & white. I have never understood the big deal behind cupcakes but I was more than willing to be convinced. I tried hard not to think of the marvelous French pastries I've been fortunate to taste for the past forty years. After all, maybe these would have a filling, a surprise inside, maybe the icing would vary from one cupcake to another? D.H, Lily and I split them and ate them by the Hancock building. These cupcakes were rich and sweet but were they good, interesting, surprising? NO! Absolutely not. They were overwhelming, come to think of it, much like the decor of the shop: big, bold, unrefined. Even D.H who loooves cupcakes and buttercream was disappointed. Seven year old lily said she couldn't finish and I had to have three glasses of water to wash them down. As I'm typing this, a few hours after the tasting I still feel a bit turned off by the whole experience, the cupcakes "for your dog" at $2.50 a piece should have been a sign.

LILY'S COOL STORE
August 1st marked the opening of Lily's store. She named it the "Cool Store". In it, she sells just about everything. Everything is made of paper except for the clock and the suitcases.
